If you are a young man or woman of marriageable age in India who still hasn’t settled down, then when you step out of your house at any point in time, night or day, you can be accosted and asked the following question.

'WHY aren't YOU getting married??!!!!' (This will be said in a voice which is part concern part nagging with stress given to all the words in Capitals.)

Now this question can be asked by ANYONE, and I mean ANYONE, from the neighborhood aunty, to the security guard in your office to some person you are meeting for the first time in your life! (Remember, we live in India, where it is not too personal to ask people you barely know any random thing, as long as you make it sound like it is of grave national importance!)

I’ve also found nowadays, that my bored expression seems to get through to most folks and hence they provide multiple choice answers to make the questioning process simpler!

So here go the answers:

a) Do you already have a girl friend/boyfriend? Just that you haven’t been able to convince his/her parents or yours about the idea of marriage? (In the beginning the person asking the question is always hopeful!)

b) Don’t tell me you are waiting for the right person to come along! Do you think u will find the perfect person??!!!! (The person asking the question will then stress, “A perfect person doesn't EXIST, you just have to compromise!” All the while looking in the direction of their spouse, as if to explain how they got stuck with such a loser in the first place!! It could be for support too, but I prefer my theory!) :-)

c) Do you NOT believe in marriage and never intend to marry??! (If u choose option "c", which I sometimes do for fun, I've found it back fires because then am forced to listen to long lectures about loneliness and the importance of marriage for the human race!!!)

d) Are you gay or lesbian? Hence you are unmarried because you are waiting for it to be completely legal in India to marry! (This option is never there when old folks ask the question but it would be funny to introduce the idea and watch the fun!)

I keep choosing different options every time to keep myself entertained! After all, everyone is entitled to some fun! And it’s always good to keep people guessing… ;-)

So then why do people bother falling in love, well I think love is like a light house, it keeps us on course when we cannot see anything else. And love can never be planned, it just happens, even when you don’t want it to. So even if you try your best to be aloof and assume that love will pass you by, when you least expect it, it will happen and then there is no escaping it.

I been trying to ignore it for a while thinking that the feeling would go away, because like I said, it’s complicated. But somehow the feeling keeps getting stronger and stronger. And then I see him and suddenly for the first time in weeks, I don’t feel like crying and I ask myself, what are we doing?? Life’s too short! What are we doing??!

How do you know when it's right ?!!!

In matters of the heart how does one know when it’s right? Is being comfortable with someone a sign that they are right for you or is it a sign that there is no chemistry? Is liking someone a good enough reason to marry them or should you feel passionately about them? Is being able to talk to someone important for a marriage or is it more important to be with someone whom you find it difficult to stop talking to? Is having a well educated mate more important that having a considerate one? Is having the same interests important or is it opposites which attract? Is it more important to find someone you can live with or someone you can’t live without? Is it better to be with someone who never disagrees with you or someone whom you fight with regularly? Is coming from the same type of family background and value system important enough for you to marry someone for those reasons or is it just a pre-requisite? Is a relationship which looks good on paper as good in real life? Is hesitation a sign that this is not the right person for you or is it a sign that you are just not ready for commitment?

I’ve thought about it a lot and I think maybe there are no right answers, right moments or right guys. Maybe you just have to go with your heart….

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and I feel that at the end of the day all that anyone really wants, is to be close to someone. So while most of us who have been hurt make appearances about keeping our distance it’s all an eye wash. For at some point you have to make a decision, because making boundaries doesn’t really keep other people out, it just fences you in.

So instead of wasting your life drawing lines and making up excuses to keep people out, it’s just easier to go out there and meet new people. And as you get to know people better, you’ll find that there are certain people who stick by you no matter what happens and those are the people you need to identify and hold on to. Those are the ones worth keeping.

And yes, there is the chance that you will get hurt. But maybe we all need some pain, maybe we are just made that way. Otherwise we wouldn’t know a good thing when we saw it.

So at the end of the day, there are some relationships which we would sooner forget, some which we can’t keep silent about, some which we keep to ourselves, but every now and then there comes one which just speaks for itself!

During the Christmas holidays I went to a jungle resort nestled in a cosy valley, high up in the hills of Kerala. The place is completely cut off from civilisation with no phones, no internet, no roads and no traffic! It was so incredibly peaceful and quiet, that after a long time I got a chance to slow down and enjoy the simple things in life like the lovely view, the star lit sky, the cold breeze, the warmth of the bonfire, the fresh air, simple food and the overwhelmingly beautiful sound of silence.

Going on a holiday like this at the end of the year somehow made so much sense. It gave me a chance to slow down, re-cap the year gone by and plan for the future. So often, we go through life stumbling from one situation into the next, hardly aware of what is happening with no plan or direction in mind, when ideally we should stop and think. But few of us make time to think. Most of us make time to eat, drink and sleep, but some quiet time to think is something we leave out. Somehow it’s the last priority and seems almost absurd to schedule time to think. But it can make such a phenomenal difference, for only when we have some quiet time to ourselves are we able to think about things which are important to us, such as what we want out of life, our hopes, desires, dreams and how we plan to achieve the same. When we function without thinking we are moving and reacting based on our original plan, one which was probably made ages ago and has mostly changed over time due to other things that have taken place during the course of time. Hence we make it harder for ourselves to achieve our goals, dreams and desires as we are not working towards them based on the current circumstances.

To be able to think clearly one needs to have some quiet time to oneself, with absolutely no interruptions. For answers to some of life’s mysteries come to us only when we are quiet. And with silence comes peace and acceptance of life as it is….

Seeking Meaning in the Inherent Meaninglessness of Life

Some great man once said that, “Dissatisfaction is the nature of existence”. And how true that is, no one is ever happy with what they have. Sometimes I wonder about the futility of striving for more. For a lot of what happens in life depends on luck. And people in general are afraid to face how great a part of life is dependent on luck. It's scary to think so much is out of one's control.

There are moments in a life when for a split second, you think it’s all over and then with a little luck things go your way and you survive or maybe it doesn’t and you die. So who decides one person should live and another should die? Or who decides that a person should get all his hearts desires while others should struggle endlessly just to make ends meet?

Is there anything known as free will or is everything eventually karma? Is there really any point to existence? I sometimes feel like we are just innocents who are being slain to make way for something greater. I guess some of us just end up being collateral damage paving the way for unknown grander schemes….

Friendship

I’ve been contemplating what to write about for a while and then two of my close friends got into an argument about friendship and it got me thinking. What exactly is my definition of friendship? And after a lot of thought I think to me friendship is love with understanding.

So is being a good friend just about offering a shoulder to cry on? I think not. To me, a good friend is someone you can talk to about anything, someone who makes you laugh, someone who cares about you, someone who goes out of his or her way to do things for you, someone who looks out for you, someone who knows how to comfort you, someone who listens to you, someone who is willing to pick up the pieces when you fail and most importantly someone who understands you.

So can a single failure end a friendship? I think not, for a true friend is one who already knows all your faults but loves you and accepts you anyway. And according to me friendship cannot be destroyed by a single failure or won by a single act. I believe friendship is a lifetime venture, in which we are constantly learning, discovering and growing. And a good friendship is one in which the people involved can grow separately without growing apart. So to me friendship is special bond, a bond for life.

Favorite Book for the Month of August

My favorite book for the month of August is "A Thousand Splendid Suns" by Khaled Hosseini. This is a beautiful book which is extremely well written. Easy to read and one of those books that is able to captivate the readers interest. This book brings into focus the hardship faced by those in Afghanistan over the years, especially women. The book talks about loss, unimaginably grief, death and despair, but even when faced with these terrible circumstances the characters in the book are able to overcome these hardships and find a way go on with their lives. This book highlights the importance of friendship, enduring love, kindness and the ability of the human spirit to eventually triumph. This is a book which will make you feel grateful for all that you have been blessed with in comparison to the people in Afghanistan. Definitely worth a read.
